In this session Niamh Allen, Managing Director of Sustainable Smart Technologies, will focus on how heritage and cultural venues can use monitoring to balance comfort, cost, and carbon. Her session will cover:

• Baseline monitoring – how to establish a clear starting point and demonstrate before-and-after impacts of interventions.
• Case studies from theatres and cultural venues – showing how occupancy, energy, and environmental data has revealed hidden waste, supported comfort improvements, and justified investment.
• Occupancy insights – how spaces are really used, and how that links to thermal comfort, staff planning, and audience experience.
• Heritage-friendly solutions – non-intrusive metering and wireless sensors that can be retrofitted without damaging historic fabric.
• Balancing conservation and comfort – examples of monitoring humidity, air quality, and temperature to protect collections while improving visitor comfort.
• Intermittent and seasonal use – how data helps venues avoid wasted energy during low-use periods while staying event-ready.
• Data-driven decisions – how monitoring underpins funding applications, board reporting, and Net Zero roadmaps for cultural organisations.

LANDS Talks are short, practical talks on climate action and the arts curated by LANDS, the Lancashire Arts Network for Developing Sustainability.
